Early Cancer Detection With A Blood Test

Early detection of cancer with a blood test

Results from the prospective Pathfinder study presented at the European Society of Oncology (ESMO) meeting "open the way" to detecting cancer with a blood test, says Deborah Schrag, dean of the department of medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center ( New York).

El study led by Dr. deb schrag It is the first research that shows that with a blood test it is possible to detect up to 50 types of cancer in patients with undiagnosed cancer, in addition to predicting from which part of the body the signal comes and facilitating the subsequent detection and control of the disease.

To carry out the study presented at the congress of the European Society of Oncology, blood samples were taken from 6.621 participants (all of them over 50 years old) who were included in two groups.

The first group was considered high risk and included patients with a previous history of cancer, smokers and with genetic cancer risk, while in the second group the volunteers did not present any of the mentioned risks.

Despite the relevance of the new discoveries, it is vitally important to continue with the standard screening for the early detection of tumors such as breast cancer.

“We are working to improve the specificity and the positive predictive value, so we will continue to carry out analyses. Currently, we have work underway with 150.000 people and we hope to be able to present results in the next two years", announced Dr. Schrag.

La oncologist He also insisted that, despite the relevance of the new discoveries, it is vitally important to continue with the standard screening for the early detection of tumors such as breast cancer.

In Spain, more than 30.000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year, and it is estimated that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer throughout her life.

Early diagnosis saves lives: if breast cancer is detected in its earliest stages, the cure rate is very high. For this reason, even if there are no symptoms, it is very important that from the age of 40 mammograms and control ultrasounds are carried out annually.

La mammography It is a fast (between 15 and 20 minutes) and safe diagnostic test that allows tumors (among other pathologies) to be detected in their earliest stage, before they have invaded breast tissue, distant organs or lymph nodes.

Recent international studies show that lowering the age limit from 50 to 40 years for annual mammography (or earlier if the risk is considered high) is associated with a significant reduction in mortality from breast cancer.

At Women's CD, we recommend that all women over the age of 40 start having an annual mammogram in conjunction with their gynecological check-up”

The cure rate currently reaches 90%, thanks, among other factors, to the fact that the cancer is detected in very early stages during preventive check-ups. or in scheduled reviews when recent symptoms are detected.

Thanks to the mammography it is possible to visualize tumors up to 2 years before they become palpable and, in this way, by identifying breast cancer in its earliest stage, it is possible to achieve an early diagnosis that can save lives.
