Dr Irene Cano Pumarega is a pulmonologist and an expert in Sleep Medicine, with extensive experience in the treatment of sleep apnea, snoring, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, circadian rhythm disorders, and excessive daytime sleepiness. She takes an integrated approach to breathing, sleep and health, offering each patient a personalised, evidence-based treatment plan.
She obtained her medical degree from Miguel Hernández University in Elche (Spain); completed her residency in pulmonology at University Hospital in Getafe (Spain), and earned her PhD cum laude in medicine from the European University of Madrid (Spain). She undertook additional training at leading centres in the United States, including Tufts Medical Center and New England Sinai Hospital, and obtained the title of Expert in Sleep Medicine in 2014. She has worked as a pulmonologist at the University Hospital of Getafe for over a decade and as a sleep medicine specialist at the Instituto del Sueño in Spain for eight years. Since 2019, she has served as Coordinator of the High-Complexity Multidisciplinary Sleep Unit at the Ramón y Cajal University Hospital in the Community of Madrid, Spain, where she is responsible for the comprehensive management of sleep-related respiratory disorders.
With over 40 scientific publications, more than 150 conference presentations, and active participation in 20 research projects, she is considered a leading figure in the field of sleep-related respiratory disorders. She is a member of SEPAR, Neumomadrid, the Spanish Sleep Society, the European Respiratory Society, and CIBERES, and has held numerous leadership roles in scientific committees. Her academic career includes directing specialised courses, teaching at university level, and coordinating the International Master’s in Sleep Medicine.
Dr Cano Pumarega has been awarded multiple research prizes and competitive grants. She combines scientific rigour and extensive clinical experience with a person-centred ap
