La Artificial insemination is an assisted reproductive technique used in couples who have difficulty getting pregnant. It is also used in single women or female homosexual couples.

It is a very simple technique and it is the one that most closely resembles the natural process.

It is indicated in young women with permeable uterine tubes, with a correct ovarian reserve and less than a year of sterility.

Couples diagnosed with a mild male factor and, in which we improve sperm quality with the processing of the sample, can benefit from insemination.

With Artificial Insemination, being a process very similar to the natural one with relationships, the chances of pregnancy hardly increase. Above all, in couples who have been searching for more than a year and with an unknown cause of sterility.

The process of Artificial Insemination begins with the rule and consists of a first phase known as the stimulation phase, carried out with subcutaneous hormonal treatment at very low doses to promote the growth of one or two follicles at the level of the ovaries. This phase can also be performed without hormonal treatment by only ultrasound monitoring of the natural cycle.

When the follicle reaches the size from which we know it can give us a mature ovum capable of being fertilized in the uterine tube, it is when we go to the ovulation phase by administering an injectable medication to induce ovulation (rupture of the follicle) and, in this way, facilitate the jump of the ovum towards the tube.

This occurs 36 hours after said medication and that is when the insemination technique must be performed.

The man must deliver a fresh semen sample to the laboratory on the same day of the technique. With the sample delivered fresh, or with a semen bank sample, the processing is carried out by means of a centrifuge, obtaining a sample reduced in volume and highly concentrated in motile sperm.

Once we have the preparation, the insemination phase is carried out through a vaginal catheter. We do this process in the consultation without sedation and guided by abdominal ultrasound; it usually lasts about 5 minutes. After insemination, the woman can return to her usual activity.

Two weeks later, the urine pregnancy test is performed.

En Women's Barcelona We are very selective with the couples who are going to perform Artificial Insemination and if we do not achieve pregnancy on the third attempt, we indicate IVF.

Everything that occurs naturally or by artificial insemination in the tube is what we can observe in the laboratory through IVF.

That is why, from the 3rd Artificial Insemination, we have to perform a more diagnostic and more complex technique to get to the positive.

Conjugal Artificial Insemination (IAC)

This assisted reproduction technique is a simple, fast and painless technique that aims to increase the chances of pregnancy.
Insemination is carried out after prior ovarian stimulation hormonal treatment and under rigorous medical supervision. Conjugal artificial insemination (IAC) is carried out in the same gynecological consultation and consists of depositing the semen sample, once trained, inside the patient's uterus on the same day that ovulation occurs, in such a way , the distance between the ovum and the sperm is reduced, facilitating fertilization and therefore, increasing the chances of achieving a pregnancy.

When is conjugal artificial insemination indicated?

  • When there are slight alterations in seminal quality.
  • When abnormalities are detected at the level of the cervix.
  • In couples with sterility of less than 2 years of age and of unknown origin.

It is essential that at least one of the two fallopian tubes is patent and that the male also meets minimum seminal parameters.

La artificial insemination It can also be performed in serodiscordant couples for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and for the hepatitis B and C virus.

If the male is the carrier of the virus, a semen wash will be carried out before using the sample.

Artificial Insemination with Donor Semen (IAD)

The preparation carried out in Artificial Insemination with donor semen is exactly the same as that carried out with spouse's semen, unlike the previous one, a frozen bank semen sample (Semen donor) is used.

The sperm is kept cryopreserved and only samples that have prevailed and passed thawing tests are used, allowing insemination to proceed with a good amount of motile sperm.

La semen donor selection It is carried out according to the physical and immunological characteristics of the couple, or of the recipient women, taking into account the blood group and Rh, weight, height, eye color ...

When is artificial insemination with donor semen (lAD) indicated?

  • In the case of couples with altered male factor
  • In the case of suffering from a severe hereditary disease and it is not possible to carry out genetic counseling and PGD
  • Women who do not have a partner but want to have children
  • Women with a female partner who wish to have offspring
