Urinary Incontinence And Depression

Urinary incontinence and depression

Women with urinary incontinence suffer higher rates of depression and have lower levels of self-esteem than women without it. Incontinence is much more than an annoyance or discomfort. It is a very common gynecological disorder that is not usually given enough importance, although it has a solution and can be treated very effectively.

Female urinary incontinence is a very common gynecological disorder that affects one in ten young women and four out of ten women over 75 years of age.

The impact of incontinence on emotional well-being and mental health is very high and, according to recent scientific studies, women with urinary incontinence have higher rates of depression and lower levels of self-esteem.

There are many women who leak urine when they laugh, cough, lift weights or even when they have sex ”.

Researchers from the São João University Hospital Center (Portugal) drew on data from a survey conducted every five years by the Portuguese Ministry of Health and analyzed the responses of some 10.000 women aged 18 years or older.

Women who reported urinary incontinence were 66% more likely to be diagnosed with depression, went to the doctor more often for mental health reasons, and had more feelings of guilt and lower self-esteem than women without incontinence.

The high levels of depression and low self-esteem of women who suffer from incontinence are very concerning. Many women are ashamed to talk about it even with their gynecologist and for this reason they ignore that the vast majority of patients who receive professional advice and adequate medical treatment solve or improve symptoms thanks to receiving advice and personalized treatment.

Types of incontinence

  • Stress Urinary Incontinence:

If an involuntary leakage of urine occurs when laughing, coughing, sneezing, or lifting weights, it could be Stress Urinary Incontinence.

  • Urgent Urinary Incontinence:

  • Mixed incontinence:

  • Other causes:
